What’s Included in Fuel System Maintenance?

You likely don’t think about your fuel system very often. However, if you’ve recently noticed sluggish acceleration or the need to fill up gas more often, there could be something going on under the hood.

Keep reading to learn why regular fuel system maintenance matters and why a certified technician is the right person for the job.

How Does the Fuel System Work?

To know how your fuel system operates, it’s important to understand the parts of your car’s fuel system. Your fuel system comprises the fuel tank, fuel pump, fuel filter, and fuel injectors, and it regulates how much fuel goes to the engine at the right time. Fuel is drawn from the tank before it’s filtered, pressurized, and precisely sprayed into the engine for combustion.

Like any system in your vehicle, your fuel system isn’t perfectly clean, and it gets dirty over time. It carries microscopic contaminants that eventually form deposits on injectors, filters, and other components. Proper, regular fuel system maintenance by a certified technician ensures this process is uninterrupted, so your engine can run properly.

Signs Your Fuel System Needs Attention

Watch for these symptoms:

  • Rough idling or engine sputtering can be a sign of dirty injectors or low fuel pressure.
  • Poor fuel economy may mean injectors aren’t atomizing fuel efficiently.
  • Difficulty starting, especially during cold weather, can mean a fuel pressure or injector issue.
  • Engine surging or hesitating under acceleration may be an indicator of fuel delivery inconsistency.

What a Technician Does During a Fuel System Service

Here are the main steps your technician will follow to make sure your fuel system is running properly:

  • Visual inspection: Your technician will check the fuel lines, connections, and the filter for obvious signs of wear or leaks.
  • Fuel pressure test: They will verify that the pump is delivering fuel within the manufacturer’s specified range.
  • Fuel filter assessment/replacement: They will check for clogs in the filter that may restrict flow and force the pump to work harder.
  • Throttle body cleaning: They will remove any deposits on the throttle body that can affect air-fuel mixture and overall engine performance.
  • Fuel system cleaner treatment: The technician may add a cleaner to the tank as a preventive measure.

Throughout a fuel system service, your technician will use diagnostic equipment to determine which of these steps are required for your vehicle’s unique needs. This is generally not a one-size-fits-all service and requires professional tools and skills to do it properly.

A Note on GDI Engines and Canadian Fuel

Many newer vehicles are manufactured with a gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine. These control the air-fuel mixture more precisely. This innovation lowers emissions and fuel consumption, which improves engine power output.

However, in older port fuel injection engines, fuel was sprayed onto the intake valves, which helped keep them clean. GDI bypasses the intake valves entirely, so oil vapour and combustion byproducts accumulate on them over time. This means they typically require more frequent fuel system attention.

It’s also important to note that ethanol-blended fuels are standard across Canada. For most engines, this isn’t an issue, but ethanol-blended fuels can accelerate wear on older fuel system components or on those not compatible with ethanol-blended fuels.

Therefore, regular inspection is even more worthwhile for Canadian drivers to make sure your vehicle runs as efficiently as possible. If you’re unsure whether your vehicle is at a higher risk of carbon deposits, ask your NAPA AUTOPRO technician what service intervals are best for your vehicle.

How Often Should You Have the Fuel System Serviced?

Always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations listed in your owner’s manual, as service intervals will vary across different vehicle makes and models. But if you notice any of the symptoms listed above, like rough idling, poor fuel economy, or hesitation, then book a fuel service as soon as possible. A technician will also flag any fuel system concerns during your regular maintenance visits.

Fuel system maintenance isn’t glamorous, but with the right certified technician and professional diagnostic equipment, it protects your engine’s performance, fuel economy, and long-term reliability. If you’ve never checked in on your vehicle’s fuel system or it’s been a while since your last regular maintenance visit, it’s time to book an appointment at your local NAPA AUTOPRO service centre
