Check engine light

There are generally two reactions to an illuminated check engine light: people panic or just hope it goes away. Understandable but wrong. It could come on for anything from a serious engine or transmission problem to a loose gas cap. Best advice? See your NAPA AUTOPRO expert.

Suspension

If your vehicle bottoms out when accelerating or slumps forward when stopping; if the steering and handling feel loose; or if you’re noticing premature tire wear, your suspension probably needs maintenance.

Steering

If you notice vibrations, “free play” or difficulty turning your steering wheel, a knocking noise, uneven tire wear, or your vehicle pulls to one side, it’s time to have your steering system inspected.

Starter

If the only thing you hear when you turn the key in the ignition is a clicking, or if there’s whirring and grinding when starting up your car, your starter is done.

Car battery

Getting your battery checked and replaced with a battery that meets your vehicle’s specifications, CCA requirement and driving conditions will ensure years of trouble-free cranking.

Exhaust system

Aside from an increase in engine volume, if you see smoke, smell gas, feel vibrations, or if your check-engine light comes on, have your exhaust system inspected right away–for peace of mind and to save money.

Alternator

A weakened alternator won’t be able to supply enough power to start the car, recharge the battery or run electrical accessories. Your alternator should be regularly inspected.

Brakes

If your brake pedal feels spongy or pulsates, the brakes grind or squeal, the wheels or steering wheel vibrate, or the vehicle shakes when braking, get immediate service.
